How to Use This Website

This website has been created with two arms for analysis:

1. Regional Reports
A check variety may be selected from 7 standards. Choose the variety from the pull down menu that you have the most experience with in your area. Yield will be shown for the check and other variety yields will be displayed as a percentage of the check. Without selecting priorities the varieties are basically listed in alphabetical order.

You may select up to 3 priorities in the pull down menus. For example you may choose yield 1st, protein as the second priority and lodging as the third. After selecting then you must click on sort table to have a report listing varieties ranked to match your priorities.

You will have to use the scroll bar at the bottom of the display to move across the table to see all of the characteristics. The variety names are shown at both ends of the table to help you navigate. You should click on select in the first column beside the variety you wish to examine closely. This will highlight the variety data in yellow across the table so you won't get lost.

2. Head-to-Head Variety Comparisons
This drill down process allows you to create two reports customized to your specific requirements. The summary report summarizes selected varieties performance even if they were not grown head-to-head. The Head-to-Head report shows only the varieties that were grown at the same site and the same year as the check variety.

Note: more detailed help is available on each page by holding the mouse over selection item titles.

On the first screen you must select the crop. In this pilot year Canadian western red spring wheat is the only choice but we hope to add more cereals and other crops in the future. Select CWRS and click next.

On the second screen you may select the variety you wish to use as the check. This will be the variety you currently grow or have the most experience with. Click next after making your selection.

On the third screen you may select up to five characteristics to compare ratings. As you set characteristic ratings then you will notice that the list of varieties to look at will be shortened. Note if the number of available varieties goes to zero, you will have to change the filters you have chosen. You do not have to select any characteristics if you just want to look at specific varieties available. Second step is to select the varieties you are considering for new seed. Click on a variety you want to compare then wait until it is displayed in the bottom box before selecting the next variety you wish to look at. If you want to look at all the varieties in the list click on select available to right of the menu.
 Click next when done.

On the fourth screen you must select your zone. Click on the map to find your zone. You may pick more than one zone if you wish. After you pick your zone then you can select a location or several locations to compare. Then you can choose dryland, irrigated or both buttons. After making your selections click next.

On the fifth screen you will see a table of all the characteristics and selections you have made. You may wish to zoom out to reduce the table display and see all the columns. For the head to head comparison click next.

On the sixth screen you can see the individual yield data for individual years in the locations selected. Please note the warning that red numbers indicate that the two varieties were grown head to head for less than 6 years at that location. Please take growing conditions into consideration for different years.
